Town of Brownsburg Statement Regarding Hobby Farming

Questions regarding hobby farming within Town limits have arisen due to a recent compliance case. The Town of Brownsburg's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) permits hobby farming in two zoning districts,  General Agriculture (AG) and Residential Estate (RE). The keeping of bees is consistent with the municipality's definition of hobby farming and is not permitted in neighborhoods zoned Medium Density Single-family Residential (R2).

Residents who receive a code violation notice from the Town may make an administrative appeal to the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Residents who would like to use their property in a manner that is not permitted in the UDO may apply to the Board of Zoning Appeals for a Use Variance. The Use Variance process is a review by the Board of Zoning Appeals to consider requests to permit uses within zoning districts where that specific use isn’t currently permitted. Additionally, a resident may propose a Text Amendment to the UDO that could potentially amend regulations in the code. Both processes require notice and public hearings; neither process is a guaranteed approval.

The Town's Development Services Department staff is available to answer questions regarding zoning and permitted uses or to assist residents with requests to the Board of Zoning Appeals. Call 317-852-1128 for assistance.
