Tox-Away Days Beginning Soon

The Hendricks County Recycling District provides five Tox-Away Days in 2022. The events are opportunities for Hendricks County residents to properly recycle or dispose of household hazardous wastes, medical sharps, unwanted medicines, tires, appliances, computer components and electronics. 


The 2022 Tox-Away Days will be held as follows:

  • April 23rd at Brownsburg East Middle School—enter from Airport Road
  • May 21st at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds—NEW THIS YEAR: enter at Gate 5
  • July 16th at Hickory Elementary School in Avon—enter from Avon Avenue
  • August 27th at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds— NEW THIS YEAR: enter at Gate 5
  • October 22nd at Plainfield Middle School—enter from Longfellow Lane

The events are open from 8:00am to 1:00pm and are available to Hendricks County residents only. Regulations prohibit businesses or other organizations from using the events. All of the events are available for all Hendricks County residents.

Household Hazardous Waste

The events are designed to collect and properly dispose of those materials considered household hazardous wastes (HHW). Common examples of HHW include:   cleaners, antifreeze, fluorescent light bulbs (including CFLs), herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals, oil-based paints and stains, fuels, mercury-containing items, medicines, medical sharps, batteries and adhesives. These materials should not be disposed of by flushing or pouring them down a drain and shouldn’t be sent to a landfill or incinerator for disposal. All household hazardous wastes are accepted free of charge during the Tox-Away Day events and will be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. 

No Latex Paint, Document Shredding or Heavy Trash Disposal

The District asks residents not to bring latex paint to Tox-Away Day for disposal since it is water-based and safe to dispose of with normal household trash. Paint must be solidified before trash haulers will pick it up at the curb. 

Additionally, document shredding and heavy trash disposal is not offered at the events. Items such as mattresses, furniture, scrap metal, flooring and construction debris should not be brought to Tox-Away Day for disposal. 

Unwanted Medicines and Medical Sharps

The District will again partner with the Hendricks County Substance Abuse Task Force to collect unwanted medicines during the Tox-Away Days, free of charge. All kinds of medicines are accepted: prescription, over-the-counter, animal medications, etc. Residents bringing medicines are asked to leave the drugs in their original containers and ensure that the name and strength of the drug is readable, in the case of prescription medicines. Any personal information may be blacked out or removed from the containers. 

Medical sharps such as syringes and lancets are also accepted at the events free of charge, but must be delivered in rigid, puncture resistant containers. Acceptable containers include FDA-approved sharps containers or hard plastic laundry detergent bottles or similar containers with original, hard plastic lids. Sharps will not be accepted in metal or plastic coffee containers, beverage containers or any type of bag. 

Problem Wastes—Electronics, Tires and Appliances

Electronics, tires and appliances will also be accepted during the events. The following fees apply.

    5. Televisions                Small:       $20

  • Appliances
    1. With refrigerant:                       $10
    2. Without refrigerant:                 $5
  • Tires
    1. Passenger Car/Truck (maximum of 12 per household)
      • First 4:                          Free
      • Next 8:                         $2 Each
    2. Truck/Semi-Tractor (maximum of 6 per household)
      • First 4:                          Free
      • Next 2:                         $5 Each
    3. Farm/Tractor (maximum of 6 per household)
      • $75 each if whole
      • $5 each if quartered

Many of the items and materials accepted for disposal and recycling at Tox-Away Days can be disposed of, recycled or donated for reuse every day via local organizations and waste management companies. Residents are encouraged to visit the District’s online Recycling Directory at to find alternatives.
