It’s not unusual for an employee to move from one job to another in an organization. But over the course of 32 years with the Town of Brownsburg, no Jim-Waggoner-Careeremployee can boast the variety of job duties that Public Works Director Jim Waggoner can.

Jim started with the Town of Brownsburg in 1988. His first job was as Assistant Superintendent for the Street Department, where he served as an equipment operator and mechanic. About two years later, Jim moved to Town Hall to become a building commissioner, overseeing building and infrastructure inspections throughout town. His role was a precursor to the creation of today’s Development Services Department.

As he continued his rise up the career ladder, Jim served 14 years as Assistant Town Manager/Building Commissioner, a job that included duties ranging from hiring, evaluating and firing employees to inspecting buildings.

In 2007, Jim was named Town Manager, a job he held for three years. Among his memories as Town Manager was a guest spot in 2008 on “Inside Indiana Business” where he discussed the benefits of Brownsburg as a location for the racing industry and other businesses.
In 2009, his career went full-circle and he returned to the Street Department. Last year, he was named Public Works Director.

Prior to joining the Town, Jim served as a captain with the volunteer fire department for 10 years. “Some of my fondest times were when I was with the fire department,” he said. “There were a lot of sad times, but there were a lot of good times knowing you could help people. A lot of people may not believe this, but I enjoy helping people. That’s been my whole goal in life, trying to help people.”

If you ask Jim what he is most proud of, he quickly says, “My biggest accomplishment is being married for 47 years, having three wonderful kids and seven beautiful grandchildren.”

Jim is threatening to retire this year. “I’ve seen a lot of changes in this town,” he said. “We’ve made a lot of strides. It’s been a rewarding career.”
